Today we move on to some helpful warnings in the news, including the rising number of breast cancer diagnoses in young women, PCOS awareness, and HGH eighty HD, and joining us now is Dr. Jessica Shepherd, who explained everything really well for us. She explained that there is a lot we need to know why this is happening, so this is really interesting: why are the numbers of women being diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of fifty in the US increasing, why are we seeing an increase in women being diagnosed in their forties, thirties, and even twenties? What do we need to know? You know when we think about breast cancer, especially with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are always looking for a steady decline or a sustained decline, so when we see studies like this, they can be quite alarming, this study specifically looked at overall breast cancer mortality in the US, which actually decreased by forty percent from nineteen eighty-nine to two thousand.
He said i am twenty-two years old, but what we saw is that when we look at women under the age of fifty, there is a one percent annual increase, so this is something that we clearly need to pay attention to. Because it was about one point, four percent annually. Then under fifty and over fifty, only zero point seven percent. What I found interesting about this study is that we saw that Asian American and Pacific Islander women actually had the fastest increases in both of these groups, so that is why we continue to spread awareness. Let every group of women know what is on their wrists. How to reduce the risk of breast cancer is very important, and so I understood that I did not want to throw any curveballs. Because i am in that demographic myself. Where these diagnoses in women are seven times more likely to be seen at a younger age at an advanced stage, what women need to know about mammogram testing, dense breasts, what it means, and what to do about it.
Yet the breast, is actually very dense, as in looking at the actual tissue of the breast, and typically, bros have a lot of fatty tissue, but when it is not as much, you do have density in that tissue. It does mean that with imaging, and it is sometimes a little bit harder to find those microscopic projections. That can help us detect breast cancer early, so that is important, and the other thing that is important again. Especially for black women, is that they typically have a more advanced diagnosis of breast cancer, which again leads to mortality, so the important thing is to make sure that you are doing self-examinations, you are going to your doctor, knowing your family history, and also getting mammograms at age forty. Making sure that you follow through with it. Don’t put it off, we have done really well either early diagnosis and detection, so we need to make sure that we continue to do those things to increase that. Early detection is very important.
So Doctor Shepherd, the World Health Organization, says that eight to thirteen percent of women of reproductive age have PC, also known as polycystic ovary syndrome, is the leading cause of infertility. However, seventy percent of affected women around the world remain undiagnosed, although recently this syndrome has been discussed more openly. On social media, have you seen an increase in your patience? And why are so many people undiagnosed? I think for me, i have gotten older. They have seen it as an OBGYN, but I think awareness has increased. It’s something that is very hard to diagnose because it is a syndrome. So it can easily affect you severely. It is called the peace deal polycystic ovarian syndrome is that it is one of them. Most endocrine disorders that affect the reproductive system, but they also affect the metabolic system. So there are many other things with this diagnosis, such as issues with insulin resistance.
