NASA's 'Hidden Figures' presented with the Congressional Gold Medal

At a time in America when our nation was divided along lines of color and gender, these women dared to step into fields where they were not previously welcome. They excelled in science and math and made unprecedented contributions to aeronautics. But these women didn’t just crunch numbers and solve equations for the space program. They laid the foundation on which our rockets launched. Our astronaut flu and the sword of our nation, although we call them the hidden men, we should not think of them as merely supporting characters in the American story of space exploration. They were engineers and mathematicians who truly wrote the story themselves. Their work proved that they were out of the dry land, that there was much to commend this work and their work proved that our strength as a nation lives on in our ability to harness the talents of all our citizens and to look beyond divisions and into new frontiers where we all work together.

It is my great honor to serve on behalf of our nation. The women we honor made it possible for earthlings to live beyond the limits of the earth. Pioneers for future generations did not come this far. It only took our faith to come this far.
