Walz said tonight I think your biggest nightmare is, look I have a seventeen-year-old kid and I witnessed a shooting at a community center playing volleyball, these things don’t leave you as a member of Congress, I was surrounded by dozens of parents from Sandy Hook in my office. They were looking at my seven-year-old picture on the wall, I was the father of their seven-year-old child. They were asking us to do something. I’m a hunter, I own firearms, vice president we understand the Second Amendment, but our first responsibility to our children is to figure this out. In Minnesota we’ve advanced red flag laws, increased background checks and we can start getting data, but the problem here is if we really want to solve this, we have people who will not allow the research, the research that needs to be done on gun violence.
The idea that we should just live with it, what I think is a good starting point for a conversation here is I 100 percent believe that Senator Beyoncé hates these kids. It breaks your heart, I agree with that, but it’s not enough, when we know that they are things that work, I spent time in Finland. Saw some Finnish schools. They don’t have this, even though the gun ownership rate is high in their country, there are some reasonable things we can do to make a difference. It’s not violating your second amendment. The idea of having some of these weapons out there just doesn’t, it doesn’t make any sense, generally Harris has worked on this issue as attorney general. She knows it’s hers, nobody’s trying to scare, say we’re taking your guns, but I ask all of you do you want your schools to look like fortresses, is this where we have to go. When we know that there are countries around the world where their children are not practicing these kinds of things, they are children, we owe it to them to fix them. These are things that shouldn’t be so difficult.

God have mercy it’s horrible and I really appreciate what Tim said about Finland. I think it shows some of the differences between our own countries. The problem of gun violence and Finland it’s okay for coercion. We have high rates of mental health abuse or mental health substance abuse. We have high rates of depression high rates of anxiety we unfortunately have a mental health crisis in this country that I really think we need to get to the root causes. Because I don’t think that’s the whole reason. But I think that’s a big part of why we have such a bad gun violence problem. Another driver of the gun violence epidemic particularly affecting our children doesn’t get as many headlines.
