The mayor of Springfield, Ohio released a public message saying we need help, not hate. This echoes former President Donald Trump, who pushed the unfounded claim that Haitian immigrants are eating pets. Now we’re seeing the real-life impact Trump’s words are having on the Haitian community. On Thursday, Springfield City Hall had to close due to a bomb threat. On Friday, elementary schools were evacuated for the second day in a row due to threats, so this is how the rumor was busted. It made its way into Trump’s comments on the debate stage. According to the non-political fact checking organization News Guard, it appears to have started from a post on a private Facebook page in Springfield, Ohio. In it, the poster claims that their neighbor’s daughter’s friends missing cat was found cut up and ready to be eaten by Haitian immigrants. The poster says they’ve been told this is happening to dogs, ducks and geese as well, but there are more. It’s unclear when it was posted, but it went viral on Twitter on September 5, a few days before the presidential debate. Within days and without any further evidence, Ilan Mosqueda and vice presidential candidate Sen. Jay Events were repeating it. Other Republican politicians like Sen. Ted Cruz and Congresswoman
Jim Jordan and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene Neo Nazis were also a major driver in spreading hateful bigoted rhetoric about Haitian immigrants in Springfield for months. Where this summer they marched through downtown Gaffield carrying rifles and swastikas and last month Springs asked the mayor of Springfield to remove a member of the police that blood donation from a city commission meeting I try to bring a word of warning.
